History of VIT

It was established in accordance with Section 3 of the 1956 University Grants Commission (UGC) Act. The Vellore Engineering College, a self-supporting institution, was established in 1984. In 2001, Vellore Engineering College received university status from the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development. The university's owner and current chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan, previously held positions as a minister in the Tamil Nadu government and a member of parliament. In recognition of his contributions to India's education system, West Virginia University in the United States awarded him an honorary doctorate. The Vice-Presidents are Mr. Sankar Viswanathan, Dr. Sekar Viswanathan, and Mr. G.V. Selvam; the Vice-Chancellor is Dr. Rambabu Kodali; and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor is Dr. S. Narayanan.
