The University of Calcutta's foundation
In a despatch to the Governor-General of India in Council in July 1854, the East India Company's Court of Directors proposed the establishment of the Universities of Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay.
On January 24, 1857, the University of Calcutta was established in response to that dispatch.
The University initially adopted the University of London's model before gradually introducing changes to its constitution.
