Faculty of Management Studies (FMS)

In addition to corporate management, the Faculty of Management Studies focuses on management education. The dedication entails thinking leadership combined with an in-depth knowledge of business. With a focus on concepts and theory, the pedagogical approach includes fieldwork, case studies, and instrumented feedback. The goal is to promote intellectual curiosity and wide-open minds to the intellectual adventure.
However, there are many aspects of the school that go beyond what is taught there. FMS has the distinct honour of being affiliated with the University of Delhi, one of the top universities in the world, which has some of the best departments in the fields of operations research, economics, law, and sociology. With the help of contributions from many departments, our collaborative approach benefits from a far broader perspective and deeper understanding. This is demonstrated by the accomplishments of our alumni, who hold leading roles in businesses and governments all across the world. History
 

The Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) , University of Delhi made a modest beginning with a three year part-time Post graduate management programme in Business Administration for senior and middle level executives in 1954. The first set of professors was trained at the Stanford University Business School and institute was started at the Delhi School of Economics under the leadership of Prof A. Dasgupta. The past decades have witnessed a significant growth in the nature and number of programmes offered at the FMS. FMS has exchange programmes and collaborative arrangements with leading industrial and business houses, management institutions and professional associations in India and abroad. It is the founder member of the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA) and is working towards regional cooperation in management education and development in the spirit of SAARC. FMS is also one of the participating institutions in the India-EEC Exchange and Co-operation Programme for Management Professors.

In appreciation of its contributions, the Industrial Finance Corporation of India and Amway Corporation have created chair professorships in Industrial Management and Entrepreneurial Development respectively. Shanti Prasad Jain Advanced Management Research Center as a research and development wing of FMS has been setup at the University of Delhi, South Campus with assistance from Bennett Coleman & Company Limited.

Computer Centre

At the FMS Information Technology Group, the intention to keep our institute at the forefront of technology applications in management education. This implies constantly innovating, evolving as well as adapting to changing realities.

We take a broad approach that not just involves the computer center in the faculty, but the infrastructure backup in the libraries, class rooms, hostels, video-conferencing facilities and the Internet. Faculty, staff and students play crucial roles in identifying needs, embracing new technologies, and using applications in creative ways. We harness the role of technology as a critical enabler in all our operations and hence the team includes representation from the all the student societies, recruitment & media team along with core faculty support. An indication of this is the website which has set up a virtual FMS community to link the FMS diaspora and leverage its enormous strengths.

Our Philosophy

In order to achieve the greater goal of giving students access to additional resources and making IT a cost-effectively routine part of life, it is intended to employ computers as a strategic enabler.
 

Computer Hardware Infrastructure

FMS has the among the most modern, state-of-the-art computer centers with over 100 computer systems (Intel Dual Core and AMD Athlon) in its north campus facility. Along with this computers are available in the library, class rooms and lecture theaters while faculty has individual computers and laser printers in their rooms. For use of the societies - computers and laptops have been provided at the newly designed Management Science Association (MSA) Center. The computer to student ratio is amongst highest in any institute in the country. The entire campus has a Switch based Local Area Network fully Wi-Fi enabled. The students can work on various platforms such as Windows 7, Linux, Windows-XP and Windows 2000 server. The entire campus is fully networked via a 10 MBPS leased line internet connectivity keeping students connected with the rest of the world round the clock. The hostel rooms are also connected to this through the leased line facility provided by the University via the centralized server.
 

Computer Centre is responsible for Video Conferecing System which allows conferencing over both web and ISDN lines. This system have put in place keeping in mind the smooth functioning of the placement process as well as increasing the interaction with the corporate and academia through guest lectures and seminars. This would further facilitate the interaction with the international business schools with whom we have ongoing collaboration.


The systems are supported by high speed network laser printers, Scanners and CD/DVD writers. The centre is equipped with variety of software such as Windows 7, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 8, MS-Office 2010, Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro,  SPSS 17.0, E-Views7, Lotus SmartSuite, Corel Word Perfect, Harvard Graphics, Oracle RDBMS, Visual Basic, Visual C++, etc. A number of business and management software and business games like Business Simulation, Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management, Quantitative Analysis, Multi Dimensional Scaling etc. are also available in the centre. The students can also make use of a variety of CD-ROM based databases, corporate databases such as CMIE’s PROWESS, VANSCOM Database and Vans Electronic Library. Students can have access to Delhi University Library System E-Journals from Computer Centre. FMS also has a well equipped computer centre in the S.P.Jain Advanced Research Centre, South Campus.

With the installation of the much awaited Bloomberg terminal at the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi, a firm foundation of the Financial Lab has been established at the Institute. With this, FMS joins the very exclusive club of Top B-schools in India which are equipped with a Finance Lab.

This lab equips the students with a wealth of authentic industry and economic data from across the world which can be used for purposes ranging from the course-mandated Final year Dissertations to Sectorial research for Competitions and Placement preparations. With the study of the financial derivatives already being an integral part of the course for student specializing in Finance, this lab can indeed increase the quality and scope of the student projects exponentially along with adding immense value to the research carried out by the Faculty members.

 

Online Initiatives - Website
 

The website is designed as a portal for the FMS Diaspora as well as a knowledge site for the management students, professionals and academicians. The site has community pages for individual batches from FMS, faculty resources, an online knowledge database of management articles as well as online resources for the various societies and clubs.
 

One of the main design intentions was to help increase the interaction between the various full time as well as the part time courses, as well as the students spread across the two campuses. For this website provides general online resources as well as virtual community spaces.
 

Future events planned on this site include taking the various journals online, online management games and competitions.
