The National Medical Institution (Estd 1921) and the Calcutta Medical Institute were combined to establish the Calcutta National Medical Institute (Estd 1948), which is now known as the Calcutta National Medical College.
Since 1967, the hospital and college have been managed by the West Bengal government's Department of Health and Family Welfare.
Dr. Sundari Mohan Das was the college's first principal. Admissions are done entirely on the basis of NEET scores, and seats are reserved for the state quota students. College has such good networking opportunities and brilliant placement statistics, with most of the students being placed in several private hospitals off campus.
