The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced has seen a significant change this year, as the number of attempts allowed has increased from two to three. Now, candidates have the opportunity to attempt the exam up to three times, within three consecutive years, a shift from the previous rule that limited attempts to two years. This change opens up more opportunities for aspiring engineers to crack the coveted IITs.
JEE Advanced 2025 Eligibility Criteria: Key Points
- Maximum Attempts: Candidates can now appear for JEE Advanced a maximum of three times, consecutively. This offers an extra chance for those who may have missed out in their earlier attempts.
- The age limit for JEE Advanced 2025 applies to candidates born on or after October 1, 2000. SC, ST, and PwD applicants are eligible for a five-year relaxation, with the cutoff date set for October 1, 1995.
- JEE Main 2025 Requirement: To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025, candidates must secure a place among the top 2.5 lakh scorers (across all categories) in JEE Main 2025’s BE/BTech Paper (Paper I). However, due to tied ranks, the actual number of selected candidates could slightly exceed 2.5 lakh.
- Seats in JEE Advanced are distributed based on category: 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 40.5% for OPEN (General). Additionally, 5% horizontal reservation is provided for PwD candidates within each category.
- OCI/PIO Candidates: As per a Supreme Court ruling, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) or Person of Indian Origin (PIO) candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO cards before March 4, 2021, will be considered Indian nationals for IIT seat distribution. However, they will not be eligible for any reservation benefits, except for OPEN-PwD.
- Class 12 Appearance Requirements: Candidates must have taken their Class 12 exams (or equivalent) in 2023, 2024, or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as key subjects. Candidates who appeared in 2022 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2025, regardless of the number of subjects they attempted. However, if a candidate’s Board results for 2021-22 were declared after September 21, 2022, they will be eligible.
- Previous IIT Admissions: Candidates who have previously been admitted to any IIT (under any academic programme listed in the JoSAA Business Rules 2024) are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2025, regardless of whether they continued in the program. Candidates who were granted a seat but did not report or withdraw prior to the final seat allocation are eligible for JEE Advanced 2025.
In Conclusion
JEE Advanced 2025 comes with exciting changes that offer candidates more chances to secure admission to India’s prestigious IITs. With the increased number of attempts and the relaxation in the age limit, aspiring engineers now have more opportunities to realize their dreams.
